Katarina started skating when she was five years old. Then, her talent became evident, and in Karl-Marx-Stadt she entered the school that was specifically made for kids with athletic abilities. Coach Jutta was also there. The year that Witt made her breakthrough was in 1982 when she came second at the World Championships in Copenhagen. From that moment on her elegance and grace captured the eye of all. Then she began dominating this sport. Olympic victory Katarina (now Witt) was awarded the Figure Skating Gold Medal at the Sarajevo Winter Games. In a more competitive competition, afterward, she won her gold medal. She didn't win the free-skating contest, however, she was awarded gold for her results during the compulsory figure and short programme. Witt is the only female figure skater to have won the same competition twice, in the same year since Sonja Heine. Hall of Fame After enjoying success as an actress, Witt returned to the figure skating sport to take part in the 1994 Lillehammer Winter Games. Although she didn't get a single medal she was awed by fans even with the fact that she finished seventh. Witt was admitted into the World Figure Skating Hall of Fame in 1995.
